The List

Most common words first, then the rest A to Z.

Why Almost No English Word Ends In J

English spelling avoids a final J. The sound J makes at the start of JUDGE is written -GE or -DGE at the end of a word instead: CAGE, PAGE, BRIDGE, JUDGE itself. J was the last letter to be added to the alphabet, split off from I a few centuries ago, and the habit of never ending a word with it was settled long before.

So every word on this page is a loanword that kept its original spelling. TAJ, RAJ and SWARAJ come from Hindi and Sanskrit. HAJ, HAJJ and HADJ are three spellings of the Arabic word for the pilgrimage to Mecca. FALAJ is an Arabic word for an irrigation channel, and AFLAJ is its plural. BASIJ and BASEEJ are two spellings of a Persian word.

For word games that makes this a short list worth learning whole. HAJJ looks like the standout at 21 points, but a standard Scrabble set has only one J, so on a real board the second J has to be a blank, which scores nothing: 13 points before any premium square. RAJ and TAJ are the practical plays, three letters that put an 8 point J on a double or triple letter square. Which of the longer ones your game accepts depends on its dictionary, so check before you rely on one.
