About WordUnscrambler
WordUnscrambler is a free tool for people who play word games. You enter the letters you are holding (a Scrabble rack, a Words With Friends tray, the letter circle from a mobile puzzle) and it returns every valid word those letters can build, sorted so the longest and highest-scoring options come first.
The site exists because staring at seven scrambled tiles is a poor way to find the word hiding in them. A solver turns that into a list you can read.
How it works
The whole thing runs in your browser. When the page loads, it downloads a dictionary file containing roughly 270,000 English words. When you press the button, your browser checks every word in that dictionary against the letters you entered and keeps the ones that can be spelled from a subset of them.
Nothing you type leaves your device, because there is no server doing the work. The trade-off is that the first search after loading the page takes a second or two while the dictionary downloads. Every search after that is instant.
The advanced options
Beyond the basic search, you can filter results by what a word must contain, what it starts with, and what it ends with. Those filters are the difference between a list of two hundred possibilities and the six that actually fit the board in front of you.
You can also switch dictionaries. The standard list covers ordinary tournament and casual play; the slang list adds informal words that many casual games accept but formal word lists leave out.
Which words count
The dictionary is a standard open English word list. It includes rare, archaic and dialect entries alongside everyday vocabulary, which is what a word-game solver needs. Obscure two- and three-letter words win more games than common long ones.
Individual games maintain their own dictionaries and will not all accept the same set. Scrabble tournaments, Words With Friends, and mobile puzzle games each differ. A word found here may be rejected by your game, and occasionally the reverse.
