All 211 5-Letter Words With Z
Looking for a 5-letter word containing Z? Whether you're stuck on a word puzzle or need a high-value Scrabble play, here's the complete list:
The Shape of the Z List
Z is the most common of the rare letters in five-letter words, which surprises most people. The list above holds 211 words, more than the X list and far more than the J or Q lists. That abundance changes how you should play a Z tile: unlike a Q, a Z is rarely a genuine emergency.
The positions break down cleanly. 51 of these words start with Z, 15 have it in position two, 80 in position three, 50 in position four, and 18 end with Z. The third and fourth positions together account for 130 of the 211, which means a Z is usually sitting in the belly of the word, not at either end. That is the opposite of Q, which clusters hard at the front.
Eighteen of these words end in Z, and they are worth knowing as a set because they are your options when a board or a grid fixes the final square: ABUZZ, BLITZ, BORTZ, FRITZ, FRIZZ, GLITZ, GROSZ, HAFIZ, HERTZ, KLUTZ, NERTZ, PLOTZ, SOYUZ, SPITZ, TOPAZ, TROOZ, WALTZ, and WHIZZ. Notice how many end in TZ. That cluster is a spelling pattern worth memorizing on its own, because once you have a T in the fourth slot and know the word ends in Z, you are choosing from about eight candidates.
The Double-Z Trap
Eighteen words in this list contain two Z tiles: ABUZZ, DIZZY, FIZZY, FRIZZ, FUZZY, HUZZA, JAZZY, MEZZO, MUZZY, PIZZA, TAZZA, TAZZE, TIZZY, WHIZZ, and their relatives. Every one of them is a trap in a physical Scrabble game, because a standard set contains exactly one Z tile. You cannot play PIZZA or DIZZY without spending a blank on the second Z, and a blank is worth far more than the 10 points it would earn you there.
In an app that lets you type any word, or in Wordle and similar puzzles where you are guessing rather than placing tiles, the double-Z words become useful instead of impossible. PIZZA, DIZZY, FUZZY, JAZZY, and FIZZY are all common enough English words to be plausible puzzle answers, and they are exactly the ones players fail to guess because they assume a repeated rare letter is unlikely.
What a Z Tile Is Actually Worth
Z is worth 10 points in Scrabble and 10 in Words With Friends, tied with Q for the highest face value. It is worth 10 in Wordfeud too, which the Wordfeud Helper scores a rack with. There is one Z tile in a standard 100-tile Scrabble set. Unlike the Q, the Z carries no structural baggage. It does not demand a partner letter, it appears in words of every length, and it has short outlets in most tournament dictionaries, including ZA and ZO. Those two-letter words are the reason a Z is almost never dead on your rack.
Because a Z is easy to place, the mistake players make is placing it too early and too cheaply. A Z dumped in open space for 12 points is a poor trade for the same tile landed on a Double Letter inside a word that also crosses a Double Word, which routinely lands in the 40s or 50s. Hold the Z one or two turns while you look for a premium square. The odds of finding one are good precisely because 211 five-letter words and hundreds more of other lengths will accept it.
The strongest single pattern is the parallel play. It runs on the two letter words, so learn those first. Slide a short Z word alongside an existing word so the Z counts in both the across and the down direction. A Z on a Double Letter counting twice is 40 points before any word multiplier, out of two or three tiles. That is a bigger swing than most seven-letter bonuses at a casual table.
Z at the Front: A 51-Word Family
The 51 Z-initial words are their own vocabulary. ZEBRA, ZONES, ZESTY, ZILCH, ZLOTY, ZONAL, and ZOOMS are the ones that feel like ordinary English. The rest lean on borrowings, currency names, and specialist vocabulary. ZLOTE and ZLOTY are Polish currency, ZAIRE is a former currency of what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, ZEBEC is a Mediterranean sailing vessel, and ZORIL is an African polecat.
For board play, the ZO- group is the most useful part of this family, because O is a common tile and the words are short and flexible: ZONAL, ZONED, ZONER, ZONES, ZONKS, ZOOID, ZOOMS, ZOONS, ZORIL, ZORIS. If you hold a Z and an O with an S available, ZONES and ZORIS are almost always placeable somewhere.
Using the Z List in Wordle and Daily Puzzles
Z is one of the least frequent letters in curated answer lists, so it is a poor opening guess. Its value comes later. Once a puzzle confirms a Z, the candidate pool is small enough to reason through, and the position of the Z does most of the narrowing for you. A Z in position one puts you in the 51-word Z-initial family. A Z in position five puts you in the 18-word tail group, where the TZ pattern covers roughly half. A Z in position three or four is the common case and usually means a short vowel-consonant-Z-vowel shape such as DOZEN, HAZEL, or a double-Z word.
The efficient method is to stop scrolling and start filtering. Enter the letters you have confirmed into the Word Unscrambler and use "Starts with", "Ends with", and "Must include" together. A confirmed Z plus a confirmed vowel usually cuts 211 words down to fewer than ten, which is a list you can read at a glance instead of a page you have to search.
Where the Z Words Come From
English inherited very few native Z words. Almost the entire list above arrived by borrowing, and the source language explains the spelling. The TZ words came through German and Yiddish: BLITZ, HERTZ, KLUTZ, PLOTZ, SPITZ, WALTZ. The ZZ words came largely through Italian: PIZZA, MEZZO, TAZZA. The Z-initial scientific and zoological words came through Greek, which is why ZO- appears so often at the front.
That history has a practical payoff. When you are trying to decide whether a half-remembered Z word is real, ask which family it would belong to. A word that fits none of these patterns is usually one you invented, and a word that fits one of them cleanly is usually worth risking on a challenge.
