What This List Is

Take any word and sort its letters into alphabetical order. Every word that shares that exact sorted string is an anagram of it. Do that for all 269,870 words in the dictionary and you get 239,535 distinct letter sets, of which 21,871 make more than one word.

These are the 360 richest of those sets, ranked by how many different words each one produces. The richest set in the English language is AERST, which makes 13 separate words.

Nobody searches for this. It is here because it is the single most useful thing an unscrambler can teach you, and because knowing it changes how you look at a rack.

Why This Is The Most Useful List On The Site

Scan the top thirty sets and one thing jumps out immediately. Almost all of them are built from the same small group of letters: A, E, I, L, N, R, S and T. Those are the one point tiles. The letters everybody complains about drawing.

They are the most valuable tiles in the bag and the list proves it. A rack of common letters is not a bad rack, it is a flexible one. It gives you more words, more ways to fit into a tight board, and a far better chance of using all seven tiles for the bonus. A rack of rare high value tiles gives you one or two options and a lot of staring.

This is the gap between a player who is scoring well and a player who is winning. Scoring well means taking the highest value word available this turn. Winning means keeping a rack that can do something next turn too.

What To Do With It

Learn sets, not words

Memorising a single word buys you one play. Memorising a letter set buys you every arrangement of it. When you learn that AERST makes 13 words, you have learned 13 plays for the effort of learning one pattern, and you will start seeing that pattern on your rack.

Recognise the rack, then recall the set

Strong players do not shuffle tiles hoping a word appears. They sort the rack alphabetically in their head, recognise the sorted string, and recall the family. Use it to choose which word to play

When a rich set is sitting on your rack you often have several words of identical score. The right one is the one that leaves the best remaining tiles and fits the board best, not the first one you saw. Knowing the whole family lets you choose rather than take.

Use it to spot what an opponent can do

If the board shows a word from a rich set, the letters for its siblings are in play. That matters for blocking, and it matters for guessing what a strong opponent is holding.

The Arithmetic Behind It

Two numbers on this page are worth sitting with.

239,535 distinct letter sets across 269,870 words. That means most words are the only word their letters make. Anagram families are the exception, not the rule.

Only 21,871 sets make more than one word. That is under ten percent. So the sets on this page are genuinely unusual, and the top of the list, where a single set makes ten or more words, is rarer still.

The practical read is that when you hold a rack from one of these families you are holding something unusually flexible, and it is worth a few extra seconds before you commit to a play.

Why 360

It is this site's number, and the cut is honest: 21,871 letter sets make more than one word, and these are the top 360 of them by how many words they make. Nothing was padded to reach the number and nothing was trimmed to fit it. Where a real count is fixed we publish the real count instead, which is why the two letter word page says 124 rather than 360.
